A featured artist in the New Generation Jazz Emerging Artist programme, Luke Purbrick is a young jazz guitarist who also had the privilege of studying with award-winning saxophonist Binker Golding at Tomorrow’s Warriors. This experience inspired him to form the LP Quartet in 2022, performing his own music at stages such as Love Supreme, Latitude, Swanage Jazz Festival, and venues across London.
Since then, he has led several of his own bands, including Morse Contact and his Octet.
Last year, alongside Hans Koller, Calum Gourlay, and Sam Nicholls, Luke led Four in One, exploring the compositions of Thelonious Monk. He was also a featured player in Xhosa Cole’s Monk project on multiple occasions.
He is an active presence on the Brighton jazz scene, where he has performed at Brighton Jazz Festival and collaborated with musicians such as Chris Coull, Simon Savage, and Lawrence Jones.
With his Octet, he continues to push his comfort zone, exploring a wide range of influences in both improvisation and composition. Inviting fellow musicians from Trinity Laban to write for the group, they explore styles ranging from free improvisation to swinging hard bop, and everything in between. These works can be heard on their two recent live albums, We Eight at the Chapel for Lunch and Live at St Alfege, both recorded in churches in Greenwich.
Luke’s new studio album Shade of the Perishing Tree features his compositions incorporating his poetry, performed by poet Spike Howarth.
