The Solomon Gundy Band is the project of British trumpeter and composer Sean Corby, bringing together a cross-generational collective of musicians from the UK’s thriving jazz scene. Their debut album ‘Hancestry’ to be released in early Summer 2026 blends soul jazz, Afro-diasporic rhythms and sound-system sensibilities into a contemporary statement that reflects both tradition and experimentation. Mixed by Ashley Slater and featuring guest appearances from UK jazz legend Courtney Pine and rising pianist Sultan Stevenson, the album bridges the pioneering generations of Jazz Warriors with sounds of today’s vibrant UK subculture. Rooted in Corby’s personal journey back to the trumpet after years away from the music, Hancestry celebrates resilience, collaboration and the evolving story of Jazz in the UK.

Their music is as flavourful as the Jamaican dish they are named after. Solomon Gundy is a spicy Jamaican pickled Herring paste usually served with crackers as an appetizer or hors d’oeuvre. The term is originally from the French word “salmigondis“, which refers to a disparate assembly of things, ideas, or people forming an incoherent whole.

‘Divine Days’ is the debut single from The Solomon Gundy Band, written by UK trumpeter and composer Sean Corby and inspired by the visionary American author Leon Forrest. Named after Forrest’s landmark novel Divine Days—often compared to James Joyce’s Ulysses for its rich portrayal of Chicago’s cultural life—the track channels literary spirit into a groove-driven piece of contemporary soul jazz. Drawing on the lineage of Stanley Turrentine while nodding to the expansive improvisational spirit of William Parker, the recording features UK jazz legend Courtney Pine alongside the voice of Trinidadian singer-songwriter Drew Gonsalves, whose modern calypsonian style brings an additional layer of rhythm and poetic storytelling to the track.
