Gayance is a force of nature whose trajectory over the last decade has solidified her as a vital architect of the global electronic soundscape. A Montreal-born, Lisbon-based artist, she operates at the intersection of high-art intellect and dancefloor fervour, having evolved from a documentary filmmaker and archivist—capturing the raw genesis of the Montreal beat scene—into a globally recognized producer and cultural icon.
Her ascent has been defined by a refusal to be siloed. After a breakout debut, Mascarade (Rhythm Section, 2023)—which earned a Polaris Music Prize shortlist nomination and acclaim from legends like Laurent Garnier, Jamz Supernova, and Gilles Peterson—Gayance faced the compounded pressures of independence: the isolation of the industry, the scrutiny of rapid success, and significant personal health struggles. These challenges became a crucible for transformation. Through a pivot into herbalism, spirituality and a relocation to Lisbon, she found the space to heal, grieve, and eventually redefine her relationship with her art and herself.
As a “dancer-first” DJ, Gayance commands the room with the magnetic poise of a 70s cinematic icon. Her sets are a masterclass in eclecticism, seamlessly bridging ’00s Neptunes bounce, Dirty South grit, West London Broken Beat, Caribbean oldies, and Soulful House. Whether performing at Panorama Bar, Fabric, MUTEK, or Montreux Jazz, she incorporates live vocals into her hybrid performances, creating an immediate, emotional connection with the dancefloor.
2026 marks a new chapter with the release of roaming on Brighton’s iconic Tru Thoughts. A sonic travelogue born of a decade in transit—spanning eleven winters in Brazil, formative years in Brussels and Amsterdam, and the constant navigation of what it means to travel as a Black woman—roaming is her most personal work yet. It is a profound exploration of the “political movement” of the diaspora, weaving the rhythms of her Haitian roots with the electronic textures of London, New York, Haiti and Montreal.
